How we gathered it

On October 13, 2026 we recorded every firm on the first five pages of Clutch's directory of artificial intelligence companies in Chicago: 216 listings. We kept the 199 with an office in Illinois and dropped firms that only list Chicago as a market they serve. For each we logged the hourly rate band, minimum project size and headcount the firm publishes on its listing.

We added Clutch's own 2026 AI pricing guide for the national picture, and checked the public pricing pages of 21 AI products small businesses commonly buy. No firm or vendor was contacted, and no price is estimated.

What AI firms charge per hour

Rates split into two camps. Just over half of the firms that publish a rate charge under $100 an hour. A third charge $150 or more. Only 2 of 126 charge under $25.

The surprise is who charges what. Smaller firms, the ones a small business is most likely to work with directly, list higher hourly rates than large ones.

Smaller firms list higher hourly rates. Larger firms were more likely to list under $50 an hour (35% vs 19%).

An hourly rate alone tells you little. A $175-an-hour specialist who finishes in 20 hours costs less than a $45-an-hour team that needs 120. Ask for a fixed price against a written scope.

Project minimums

Minimums are where most small businesses get priced out. The median minimum is $10,000, 43% of firms want at least $25,000, and 19% start at $50,000.

Minimum project size

Only 22 of 138 firms (16%) list a minimum below $5,000. The median minimum is $10,000.

That leaves a gap. The projects that pay back fastest for a small business are usually small: a missed-call text-back, a quote follow-up sequence, a booking link wired into the CRM. Most of the firms above will not quote them.

The national picture

Clutch's 2026 AI pricing guide, based on verified client reviews across its whole directory, reports an average AI development project cost of $120,594 over a typical 10 months, about $11,553 a month. It puts the most common hourly band at $25 to $49 globally and $50 to $99 for US firms. Chicago-area firms skew higher than both.

A typical three-person service business could run AI seats for the team, an automation platform and an AI receptionist for roughly $120 to $250 a month in software. The real cost is setup: connecting the tools to your calendar, CRM and phone number, and writing the rules so they say the right thing.

Three ways to buy AI

  1. Do it yourself with off-the-shelf tools. $20 to $300 a month in software. Cheapest, but you own the setup, testing and upkeep, and most tools stop at their own walls.
  2. A fixed-price build on top of those tools. One specialist connects the tools you already pay for into one working system: lead comes in, gets a reply in under a minute, gets qualified, lands on your calendar. Priced by outcome and scope, not by the hour.
  3. A custom AI development project. Custom models, apps or data platforms. Expect the minimums above: $10,000 to $50,000 and up, over months.

Most small businesses should start at 1 or 2 and only move to 3 when a process is proven and the volume justifies it.

What to ask before you sign

  1. Is it a fixed price? Get the scope, deliverables and price in writing before work starts.
  2. Who owns it? Code, accounts, prompts and data should be yours at handover.
  3. What does it cost to run? Ask for the monthly software and usage bill after launch, not just the build fee.
  4. What number will it move? Response time, booked appointments, hours saved. If no one can name it, do not buy it.
  5. Who maintains it? AI tools change monthly. Ask what happens when a vendor changes its pricing or API.

Limits

Clutch listings are self-reported by firms and shown as bands, not exact rates. The directory over-represents firms that market themselves online and under-represents solo consultants. Our sample is the first five pages of one city directory on one day; rankings on those pages include paid placements. Tool prices are list prices on the vendor's site and exclude taxes, usage overages and discounts.

Questions

How much does an AI consultant cost in Chicago?

Among 126 Chicago-area AI firms that publish a rate on Clutch in October 2026, 55% charge under $100 an hour and 33% charge $150 or more. The median minimum project size among firms that publish one is $10,000.

How much does AI automation cost for a small business?

Software for a small team typically runs $120 to $250 a month: AI assistant seats at $20 to $25 per user, an automation platform from $12 to $70 a month, and an AI receptionist from $29 to $150 a month. Setup is the bigger cost and depends on how many systems need connecting.

What is the average cost of an AI development project?

Clutch's 2026 AI pricing guide reports an average project cost of $120,594 over about 10 months, based on verified client reviews. Small, fixed-scope automations cost far less but fall below most agencies' minimums.

Do smaller AI firms charge less?

Not per hour. In our Chicago sample, 46% of firms with fewer than 50 people list $150 an hour or more, compared with 21% of larger firms. Smaller firms often finish faster, so total cost can still be lower.

Should a small business build custom AI or buy off-the-shelf tools?

Start with off-the-shelf tools wired together for one clear outcome, such as answering every new lead within a minute. Move to custom development only once a process is proven and the volume justifies a five-figure build.
